Places To Visit in Pune

Shaniwar Wada is a historic fortification in Pune, Maharashtra, built in 1732 by Peshwa Baji Rao I, the prime minister of the Maratha Empire. Originally designed as the official residence of the Peshwas, the grand structure once stood as a symbol of Maratha pride and power. Though much of the fort was destroyed by a mysterious fire in 1828, the surviving walls, gates, and foundations still echo tales of royal grandeur, political intrigue, and tragic betrayal. The massive Delhi Darwaza (main gate), intricate architecture, and the once-beautiful Hazari Karanje fountain reveal the fort’s former magnificence.

Shaniwar Wada is also steeped in legend—most famously the murder of young Peshwa Narayanrao, whose ghost is believed by some to still haunt the site. Today, the fort remains one of Pune’s most visited heritage sites, attracting history enthusiasts and tourists alike. The daily light and sound show held in the evenings offers a dramatic retelling of the Maratha Empire’s rise and fall. It stands not only as a monument of historical significance but also as a reminder of the rich and complex legacy of Pune’s past.

Aga Khan Palace, located in Pune, is one of the most important landmarks in Indian history. Built in 1892 by Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III, the palace was intended to help provide employment to famine-stricken villagers in the region. Architecturally elegant with Italian arches, spacious lawns, and a tranquil setting, the palace covers an area of 19 acres. It gained national importance during the Indian freedom movement as it served as a prison for Mahatma Gandhi, his wife Kasturba Gandhi, secretary Mahadev Desai, and Sarojini Naidu following the Quit India Movement in 1942.

Today, Aga Khan Palace stands as a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi and his ideals. Both Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai passed away here during their imprisonment, and their samadhis (memorials) are located within the palace grounds. Managed by the Gandhi National Memorial Society, the palace houses a museum displaying rare photographs, personal belongings of Gandhi, and documents from the freedom struggle. It is a place of peace and reflection, attracting thousands of visitors annually who come to learn about India’s path to independence and pay homage to the Father of the Nation.

Lal Mahal, also known as the Red Palace, is a historic landmark in Pune associated with the childhood of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. It was originally built in 1630 by Shivaji’s father, Shahaji Raje Bhosale, when he moved his family to Pune. Shivaji Maharaj spent several years of his early life in this palace, and it played a significant role in his upbringing and early military training. Although the original structure was destroyed during various invasions, it was rebuilt in 1988 near its original location using historical references and remains a symbol of Maratha pride.

Inside the Lal Mahal, visitors can see exhibits, paintings, and sculptures depicting scenes from Shivaji Maharaj’s life, including his famous encounter with Shaista Khan, where Shivaji is believed to have attacked the Mughal general inside the palace. The museum-style setup offers a glimpse into 17th-century Maratha culture and Shivaji’s legacy. Located near Shaniwar Wada, Lal Mahal is a popular spot for history enthusiasts and school visits, serving as an inspiring reminder of Maharashtra’s heroic past.

Sinhagad Fort, located around 30 kilometers from Pune, is one of the most famous and historically significant forts in Maharashtra. Perched on a hilltop at about 1,312 meters above sea level, it offers stunning views of the surrounding Sahyadri mountains and valleys. Originally known as “Kondhana Fort,” it was renamed Sinhagad (meaning “Lion’s Fort”) after the brave Maratha warrior Tanaji Malusare, who laid down his life recapturing it from the Mughals in 1670 under the leadership of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. His heroic sacrifice is commemorated with a statue and a famous phrase by Shivaji: “Gad aala, pan sinha gela” (“We gained the fort, but lost the lion”).

Today, Sinhagad Fort is a popular destination for trekkers, nature lovers, and history buffs. The trek to the top is moderate and rewarding, especially during the monsoon when the greenery is lush and the air is fresh. Visitors can explore the remnants of old gates, military stables, memorials, and temples within the fort. There are also local food stalls at the top serving traditional Maharashtrian snacks like pithla-bhakri, kanda bhaji, and taak. The fort not only offers a glimpse into the Maratha empire’s valor but also serves as a peaceful getaway from the city’s hustle.

Rajgad Fort, meaning “King of Forts,” served as the first capital of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s Hindavi Swarajya for nearly 25 years before it was shifted to Raigad. Located about 40 km from Pune, this majestic fort stands at an altitude of around 4,300 feet and is known for its massive size and strategic location. The fort has several significant parts like Padmavati Machi (residential area), Suvela Machi (defensive point), and Sanjeevani Machi (strong fortification). It was here that Shivaji’s beloved wife Saibai passed away, and his son Rajaram Maharaj was born.

Trekking to Rajgad is popular among adventure seekers due to its challenging routes, historical significance, and panoramic views. The fort is dotted with temples, water cisterns, caves, and remains of palaces. It’s a must-visit for those who want to experience the glory and endurance of Maratha history.
